Toch maar even achter aangesloten. Oh well, everything tastes better with bacon ;0, zoals we hebben geleerd tijdens ons bezoekje aan Cathy!

And now: the conclusion... :)
Yesterday we arrived in one piece at Sanibel. What a lovely drive across that long toll bridge! Pelicans flying by you pass small islands with white beaches and people swimming, in the distance the light house appears and the islands shoreline slowly becomes visible! Beautiful!
Here we're also staying at the Holiday Inn, which is very close to the beach. We've given that a try the first afternoon.
The beaches here are known for the beautiful shells, we already took a few with us. The sea water is warm, hot-bath-water-warm! Very strange, you don't cool off until you come out of the sea wet and get blown dry by the warm wind.
Also regularly seen at the beach are pelicans, diving in to catch fish. The sign next to a small water hole "Watch out for alligators" is new...! We haven't seen one yet, did see a number of turtles though! There are also almost invisible musquitos here, very appropriately named "no seeums", hysterical, right! Well, until they sting you anyway... I've heard you don't even feel it till an hour later.
Also new is the request to not shine a light at the beach at night, so newly hatched turtles won't get disoriented and cannot reach the sea. Curious to find out if we'll be seeing any of those little ones!
Our last days in Orlando were nice. Eventually we picked Epcot Center to go to, the Disney Park mainly focused on futuristic ideas and technology. A lot of fun and exciting to do the Testtrack (you design your own car, virtually, and get to test it afterwards) and Mission Space (as an actual astronaut you get to go to Mars, comes with two possible levels: green without and orange with the G-forces, where your arms and face get squashed for real!) Also fun was the Universe of Energy with Ellen DeGeneres taking the lead in what at first appears to be a movie attraction. Later on your seat turns out to be on a moving tribune, that glides through a dinosaur-land. Very impressive, very large scale and lifelike! The conclusion of the day was a fireworks- and lightshow, which showed all the different country pavillions. Nicely done!
On Sunday morning we went to a service in a Baptist church. The service was special and confusing at the same time, at least to me. On the one hand you could see their love for each other, as the pastors son-in-law had been in a terrible accident, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. The pastor shared an emotional story of the past week and the congregation was very supportive of him, also donating money they had raised. On the other hand the preachers sermon was very judgmental, of the president, of several groups, kind of a "we are good" - "they are bad" type of story. Which isn't the base of Christian faith at all, because why would all of us need forgiveness so badly, if we were already that "good"...
Henry Cloud would call this a clear form of splitting (separating the good and bad in ourselves and others, instead of integrating the two through a combination of truth and grace. Sound complicated? Read my next blogpost about this subject, you can find the link on my Facebook page.)
After the service we were invited to an extensive lunch due to the Homecoming Celebration for the 103 year existence of the church. When Bram found out there would be chicken, he was gone! Enthusiastically he jumped the queue, completely unaware it was there...! To his disappointment I did make him stand in line.
There were hugh amounts of food, a lot I didn't even recognise... Certain vegetables we don't have in Holland (among others mustard greens?), meat in all kinds of sizes and shapes I've never seen before and tasty bean dishes in several colors. Oh well, everything tastes better with bacon ;0, as we learnt from our visit with Cathy! Bram was handed a hugh piece of chicken by David, which he almost ate much to my surprise!
And there was a dessert buffet...! Fresh fruits, pies in different flavors, decorated with colorful glacings, some of them up to ten layers in hight...! Yummy! That kind of ending to a service would also be great at the VEZ (my Dutch church). Although, where can you place enough food for over 3500 people...
And now we are at Sanibel Island. The hotel room takes some getting used to after that big, luxurious house. This room is smaller than the one in New Jersey, but is has all we need in it, so we just have to find our way. This place is all about location, location :)! Such a beautiful Island!
During our first night here, usually not the best one in a new spot, Bram tumbed out of bed at half past five in the morning... He and David are sleeping together in a bed and these are a lot smaller then before. Anyway, we got through it alright, so things can only get better! In the days after we've explored the lighthouse, the Ding Darling Reserve and ofcourse the beach! Who knows I might even get a tan this holiday...!!!
